Ingles Ya! is based on the principle that high-interest content motivates language development and learner persistence. The Ingles Ya! presentation segments (telenovela,"commercials," songs, and skits) are based on current popular Spanish-language television programs and traditions. These segments were carefully reviewed by cultural experts to insure their suitability, cultural relevance and acceptability for a general Latino adult audience. The vocabulary and grammar segments are based on standardized adult beginning-level language frameworks.
Each 30-minute DVD teaches basic communication skills, vocabulary, and grammar in an interactive and fun format. Using an entertaining telenovela to demonstrate target language, students chuckle, laugh, and sometimes applaud the actions and conversation of the characters.
Bilingual Support
The Ingles Ya! curriculum is intended for beginning Spanish-language dominant adult students and provides bilingual support to promote the learners' understanding of the lesson. With the bilingual approach, learners spend very little time determining meaning, and can devote their time to working with and internalizing the target language. This changes the pace of instruction.
The program was developed for Spanish -language dominant adult learners with low- levels of education in their home countries. Bilingual workbooks include instructions in Spanish to insure that learners, working on their own, are able to complete the exercises by not having to decode English direction-lines.
Note: It is not necessary for teacher of the individualized learning program teacher working with IY to be bi-lingual. English-only transcripts of the videos and English-only versions of the workbook allow a non-Spanish speaking teacher to preview the student materials. However, a bi-lingual teacher would have the ability to support the learner during early one-on-one teaching sessions.
Special Features:
Each video lesson contains a Special Features segment designed to introduce grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and useful phrases that are directly related to the target language of the lesson. Completion of the Special Features lesson ensures that the target language is repeated in various ways to make certain the concepts and skills are learned quickly and effectively.
