Schools receiving Federal Title I and III funding will find IY helpful in providing educational services to their Spanish-speaking parents who need improved literacy skills in order to support their child's learning. The low-literacy level materials were designed for adults, are age-appropriate in content, and include assessments normed to adults.
The Ingles ¡Ya! curriculum is intended for beginning Spanish-language dominant adult students and provides bilingual support to promote the learners' understanding of the lesson. With the bilingual approach, learners spend very little time determining meaning, and can devote their time to working with and internalizing the target language. This changes the pace of instruction.
Two models of instruction are most often used by the schools to reach out to Spanish-speaking parents to help them access the Ingles ya materials:
Classroom Delivery
The best opportunities occur when parents are available to attend a class during the hours their child is in school, and when classroom space is available at the child's school. When the school day starts for the child, the parent stays for the adult literacy class. Babysitting services are provided for pre-school children, where appropriate. As parents attend classes located at the child's school the potential to develop strong partnerships between parents and the school increase and most often results in developing authentic parent engagement.
